Study in USA

Overview

For a U.S. visa application, the required paperwork is divided into mandatory items (which you must have to enter the embassy) and supporting items (which help prove your case).

1. Mandatory Documents

You will not be allowed to proceed with your interview without these:

  • Passport: Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay. Bring all old/expired passports as well.

  • DS-160 Confirmation Page: The page with the barcode you get after submitting the online application.

  • Appointment Confirmation: The printed letter showing your interview date and time.

  • Visa Fee Receipt: Proof that the application fee (MRV fee) has been paid.

  • Photo: One 2x2 inch (51x51 mm) color photo taken within the last 6 months (white background, no glasses).

2. Supporting Documents (Average Checklist)

While the officer may not ask to see all of these, it is standard practice to carry them in a clear folder:

  • Financial Proof: Bank statements from the last 6 months and tax return records.

  • Employment Proof: A letter from your employer (stating your position, salary, and length of employment) and recent pay stubs.

  • Business Owners: Company registration/license and tax documents.

  • Purpose of Trip: A basic travel itinerary or an invitation letter from a U.S. host/company.

  • Ties to Home: Property deeds, marriage certificates, or family records that show you have reasons to return home.

3. Category-Specific Forms

  • Students (F-1/M-1): Form I-20 and SEVIS fee receipt.

  • Exchange Visitors (J-1): Form DS-2019.

  • Work Visas (H/L): Form I-797 (Approval Notice).

Note: During the interview, keep your answers concise. The officer usually decides based on your verbal answers and the DS-160 form, using the documents only to verify specific details if needed.
